HABITS AND ADDICTIONS
I've been helping clients overcome habits and addictions for over 10 years. When you are at the point where you've had enough of the addictive behaviour then give me a call so we can discuss how I can help you.
Among the habits and addictions I've worked with are:
For stopping smoking please see the dedicated stop smoking page.
I work with many addictions and habitual behaviours. However I don't work with hard drugs such as heroin where there is a physical withdrawal. In addition, if you are already seeing a doctor, psychotherapist or counsellor regarding your problem then you'd need a letter of referral from them before coming to see me.
The majority of addictions and habits have an emotional component and an habitual component. There are generally also triggers that trigger off the behaviour. The emotional component might be that the behaviour relieves stress or tension, or makes you feel good while you are doing the behaviour. However it is unlikely you were born doing the behaviour - the behaviour was learned and, provided there is enough motivation to do so, the behaviour can be stopped.
TRICHOTILLOMANIA (TTM)
This mainly affects girls, and is the act of pulling out one's hair. Sometimes there may be underlying trauma that started the behaviour, and if so my aim would be to resolve the underlying issues before helping you programme your mind to replace the old negative habit of hair-pulling with a new positive response or behaviour.
I recommend you allow for at least three sessions. If you'd like to stop pulling your hair just contact us.
NAIL BITING (OR NAIL PICKING)
I'd been biting my nails for many, many years. They looked quite unsightly. Then I made a decision that it no longer looked professional. I tried to stop biting my nails by using willpower, but I found that when I was watching TV I had my hand to my mouth without even thinking about it. And when I felt anxious I would bite my nails and only realise I was doing it once my nails had been chewed."
The above is a common example of what most nail biters experience. Yet, nail biting can be one of the easiest habits to break. Often in just one session, together with a follow up cd for you to listen to. I've seen many nail biters over the years. Most bite their nails out of habit. Often there are no underlying traumatic events that need resolving. And habits respond very well to hypnotherapy.
Just contact us if you'd like to stop biting your nails (or stop picking them).
BRUXISM
Bruxism is the grinding of teeth, often taking place during sleep. This is an unconscious behaviour, and likely to be related to stress. I would use hypnotherapy to help you deal with stress and help train the subconscious mind to release stress in ways other than grinding of the teeth.
So if you'd like help to overcome bruxism, just contact us.
GAMBLING
A man came to see me a year or so ago. He couldn't go past a betting shop without going in and placing a bet. Not a problem, until he was gambling away his earnings!
The gambler is always looking for the next win, because winning makes them feel good. Gambling only becomes a problem when the gambler can no longer afford to gamble.

ALCOHOL
This can be one of the most challenging problems to deal with. Whether you are a binge drinker, a secret drinker, or you drink alcohol every day there is help at hand.
It is easier to stop drinking than to cut down. Why? Because alcohol has an effect on the brain that lowers willpower and resolve, so once a person has had one alcoholic drink there is more likelyhood of them having another. For the majority of the alcohol-related problems I've dealt with there have been underlying emotional difficulties that lead the person to start drinking.
