Do you have problems getting to sleep?

Once you get to sleep, do you have difficulty staying asleep?

Insomniacs usually fall into one of two categories. Those who have difficulty getting to sleep, and those who manage to get to sleep ok but wake up in the middle of the night and have difficulty getting back to sleep.

In both cases the problem is getting up in the morning feeling tired and exhausted.

So what causes insomnia? And how can it be helped?

When you come for an appointment, the first session includes the interview during which we will talk about your problem and go through the possible reasons that there may be sleep difficulties. Sometimes a small change to ones food and drink intake (such as cutting out caffeine) can result in better sleep. Sometimes behavioural changes, such as not going to bed until one is tired, or not watching TV or reading in bed, may help. But more often than not the lack of sleep is due to emotional reasons. This may be stress or worry, or perhaps due to past emotional traumas.
