Hypnosis & NLP

Hypnotherapy & NLP: Frequently Asked Questions

Picture
I use hypnotherapy and, where appropriate, techniques from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as part of personalised sessions. If you are considering an appointment, these answers explain what the experience may be like.

How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis is a state of focused attention. During a session, I guide you to focus on suggestions, ideas or imagery related to the change you want to make. Many people find the experience relaxing, although you do not have to feel deeply relaxed for the session to be worthwhile.
We often develop habits and reactions that seem to happen automatically. Hypnotherapy gives you an opportunity to explore those patterns and practise responding differently. Your experience and the results will depend on the issue you bring and how you respond to the process.

Will I be asleep during hypnosis?
No. Hypnosis is different from sleep. You can hear what I say and remain aware of the session. People sometimes compare the focused attention to becoming absorbed in a book or film.
You can speak, move or ask to pause at any time. Most people remember what happened afterwards, although experiences vary.

Can everyone be hypnotised?
People vary in how readily they respond to hypnosis. You do not need a particular IQ or a special ability. What matters is that you are willing to take part and feel comfortable with the process.
I will explain what we are doing and tailor the session to you. If you are unsure whether hypnotherapy is suitable, we can discuss that during a free phone consultation.

Is hypnosis safe?
Hypnosis is generally considered safe when used appropriately by a suitably trained practitioner, but it may not be suitable for everyone. You remain able to communicate during the session and can ask to stop at any point.
Some people find hypnosis calming; others experience it differently. Please tell me about any relevant health conditions or treatment you are receiving so we can discuss whether a session is appropriate for you. Hypnotherapy should not replace medical or mental health care where that is needed.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
NLP is a collection of techniques concerned with how people think, communicate and respond to situations. It was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s.
In my practice, I may use an NLP technique alongside hypnotherapy when it seems appropriate to your goal. I will explain what I suggest using so that you can decide whether you are comfortable with it.

What does “advanced hypnotherapy” mean?
I use this term to describe an individual approach that may draw on different hypnotherapy techniques and, where appropriate, NLP. It does not mean that every client receives the same method. We discuss your goals first, and I tailor the session to you.

How can hypnotherapy help me change a behaviour?
Behaviours such as smoking or nail-biting can become closely linked with routines, feelings and situations. In a session, we can explore what prompts the behaviour and use hypnosis to help you rehearse a different response.
The number of sessions needed varies by person and by issue. We can discuss what is realistic for you before you book.

How can hypnotherapy help with anxiety or other emotional issues?
Anxiety, stress and other difficult feelings can affect people in different ways. Our work begins with understanding your experience and what you would like to change. I may use relaxation, imagery and other hypnotherapy techniques to help you practise feeling and responding differently.
Sometimes past experiences are relevant; sometimes the focus is on situations you face now. We will decide together what to work on, and review your progress as we go.

How effective is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy has been studied for a range of concerns, but the strength of the evidence varies. People also respond differently, so no specific result can be guaranteed.
I offer a free phone consultation to discuss your goals, explain how I work and help you decide whether hypnotherapy may be suitable for you. Sessions are available in Finchley Central, North London, and online. Selected one-off appointments are also available in Central London.
